Simon Sings his Way Through his Marathon Training
Simon Fields has always wanted to run a marathon for charity, and it was a no-brainer to him to do it for the Hospice.
“My wife, Melody, is a Community Nurse at the Hospice,” says Simon. “For six years now, I have heard from her about the amazing care given to patients and their families, and I want to help support the wonderful work that they do.”
Simon has always been fit and is a keen footballer, but long-distance running is a new endeavour that he has had to train hard for. Fitting in the training runs with a young family has been tough, but Simon has managed to commit to three or four shorter runs throughout the week with a longer one at the weekend.
Taking the advice that you should still be able to talk or even sing when you are running at a good pace, Simon decided to take this literally by turning some of his runs into karaoke sessions. Belting out Oasis as his friend Chris ran alongside him, guitar in arms, he certainly proved that this was possible. Even his mum, Audrey, joined him a short way. Claiming to be neither a runner nor a singer, she did Simon proud, singing along to Take That as they ran along together.
“I’ve been a spectator at the London marathon a few times,” says Simon. “The humour and camaraderie amongst everyone is just amazing. The electric atmosphere is an unbelievable thing to be a part of, even just watching, so I am delighted to actually be running it this year.”
Simon can’t believe how generous people have been as he has smashed his £2000 fundraising target. Friends, family, work, and even anonymous strangers have donated to encourage him to the starting line on Sunday.
“It really inspires you,” says Simon. “Knowing that all those people believe in you is what will get me through those final miles.”
