Carina’s Story

Taking on her own 3 Peaks endeavour with warmup climbs earlier in September was Hospice trustee Carina. Setting aside 7 days, Carina successfully completed her self-set challenge and raised over £2,500 for two brilliant charities, Trailblazers Mentoring and Woking & Sam Beare Hospice and Wellbeing Care.

Following the loss of a friend who was cared for by the Hospice Carina has volunteered on and off for 14 years, and in January 2021 became a Trustee, where she has been able to transfer her skills to support the Hospice. Our Hospice trustees bring with them a wealth of knowledge, and Carina, an avid walker, has been instrumental in being one of the lead walkers for our Woodland Walk and in previous years Midnight Walk.

Much of the climb brought steep and challenging conditions, often accompanied by scrambling across thick bog, scratchy Heathers, boulders, and gullies in all kinds of weather.

Encouraged by friends and family, Carina, who despite heavy rain in some places, was greeted by the warm sun, which offered stunning 360-degree panoramic views across Ben Nevis and fellow cheerful walkers.

Carina comments: “Climbing Scafell today was a challenge…rain all day, thick mist, boulder fields 3,800 foot ascent and 25km over 8.5 hours. Joined at the top by two ambitious sheep and very few other intrepid climbers. Dry clothes and a hot shower were a blessing this evening marred by the sad news of the Queen’s death.”

Completing her mountaineering challenge on 10th September on the ascent of Snowdonia, the days walkers enjoyed glorious sunshine and visibility all the way across to Anglesey. Once at the Snowden Base camp, which ended with a well-earned pint, Carina raised a glass to new baby grandson, Rory.

“I have to confess that it was much tougher than I expected – it re-defined ‘walking, paths and distance’ – best described as scrambling or rock climbing, blind faith and distance measured in steps and lunges up and down huge boulders! But it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience with great company, stunning views and life affirming. Many thanks for all your tremendous support and sponsorship for my Three Peaks endeavour. I am delighted that I raised over £2,500 for two brilliant charities, Trailblazers Mentoring and the Woking & Sam Beare Hospice.” Comments Carina.

As ever we are extremely grateful to all our Hospice supporters who take on events like this one and more. If you would like more information and to see our upcoming events, please visit the events page or contact a member of the Fundraising team today.

Thank you again to Carina, and well done on completing this with such endurance and steadfastness.
