Andrews Story

Five years ago, Andrew Smith joined the Hospice as a volunteer. He initially chauffeured patients who did not have transport to and from the Hospice’s Wellbeing Centre. Keen to give back to the community, the Hospice was the ideal choice for him after seeing first-hand the wonderful care given to a dear friend and colleague many years ago.

As well as helping out wherever he can with fundraising activities, including our yearly Dove Ball, Andrew played a vital role in supporting other Volunteers during Covid as he regularly phoned them to keep in touch. He is also one of our befrienders, supporting patients who have a terminal illness or people who have recently been bereaved. Andrew comments:

One of the patients I befriended, spent four weeks in the Hospice for pain management. Having this more personal connection was incredible and so inspiring. Seeing how great all the staff are from clinical, to the receptionists, to the cleaning staff who always stopped for a chat and made me smile, was amazing. It makes everything we do here as Volunteers worthwhile

Andrew has recently joined the team hosting Men’s Pit Stop at our Wellbeing Centre. “Nothing is too much trouble for Andrew. He is phenomenal, and so caring and supportive.” – Nic-Morgan Savage, Wellbeing Centre Lead.

I enjoy every minute of all the volunteering work that I do at the Hospice,” says Andrew. “I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in giving their time to help the Hospice continue to give the outstanding care that is does.
